The concept of straight-edge was born out of the punk and hardcore scene of D.C. in the 80's. The term was popularized by Minor Threat and was a direct reaction to the excessive use of drugs and alcohol in the punk scene of that era. D.C. became ground zero for the movement that many still adhere to today.
